Eric Carle inspired Art

This term we have been doing some Eric Carle inspired art.
First we had to make our paper so we did this in groups.  We learnt how to mix colours and do different painting techniques.  We used templates to trace around the paper and then cut out our shapes.  It was tricky cutting out the smaller pieces.  After that we organised our pieces on a big piece of white paper and then glued them into place.  We are very proud of our art work.

Rainforest Express Trip

Today all the Year 3's went to the Waitakere Ranges to see the Upper Nihotupu Dam and go on the Rainforest Express.

First we walked through the native bush for about an hour.  We saw some mighty waterfalls, and lots of native plants and birds.

We finally reached the picnic spot where we could have our lunch. We really deserved a rest and some food.

After that the train driver spoke to us about what we will see while on the train and explained the rules so that we wouldn't get hurt.

Finally we got to go on the train through the lush bush and ten long tunnels!  In one of the tunnels we saw some amazing glow worms that looked like stars.  In the last tunnel there were some fake spiders which gave us a big fright!

Water Quality with Mrs Elmore

Water Quality with Mrs Elmore

The Year 3's are learning about Change and we are especially looking at how water quality changes.  We went down to our school gully (in our school grounds) to learn about how the quality of our water effects the life living in it.  Mrs Elmore had some fantastic activities for us to explore what lives in our stream.
We sequenced the life cycle of the damselfly.
We had to sort the insects.
We learned about how eels travel all the way to Tonga to lay their eggs, then die.  Then the babies swim all the way home and return to the same stream their parents lived in. AMAZING!
We found Tonga on the globe.

We learned about kokopu.

What insects can we see living in our stream water?
